Palestine Caravan. First edition in English, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Mr. MacGillivray with compliments from the Author 26-10-45". The likely recipient, Donald MacGillivray (1906-1966), served as administrative officer in Palestine, 1938-1942, Deputy District Commissioner, Galilee, 1942-1944, and District Commissioner, Samaria, 1944-1946.Smilansky was an early Jewish settler in Palestine, arriving in 1890. He became recognized as an authority on the land question and wrote widely. Palestine Caravan is a collection of short stories on the "sons of the soil" in Palestine - the Bedawi Arab, the Fellah of the villages, and the Jewish settlers. "He was the first modern Hebrew writer to give expression to the life of the new Jewish settlers in Palestine and to depict the way in which the Arabs lived. His Arab stories are for the most part romantic and exotic in nature" (Landman, p. 572).
