inscribed by author Herzog (1919-2012) was a French mountaineer who led this remarkable ascent of Annapurna, one of the highest mountains in the world. This French expedition was the first to climb over 8000 feet. They also explored, reconnoitered and climbed all within one season and without the use of supplemental oxygen. It was a historic climb. This bestselling book which includes an introduction by Eric Shipton inspired a generation of mountaineers. Inscribed copies are scarce and this copy is inscribed to John Cantwell who was an American doctor to the American football team - the Atlanta Braves. The loose coloured slide appears to be an image of Maurice Herzog.
