£15,000 · Offered by Shapero Rare Books

the deluxe edition A lavish publication celebrating the tercentenary of the Romanov dynasty. 1913 was marked by numerous celebrations across the country and was described as an 'extravaganza of pageantry'. No expense was spared in displaying the vast wealth and power of the empire or rather imagined wealth and power. Many of the events focused on the early history of Romanov rule and the first Tsar, Mikhail Fedorovich. This was a theme throughout the reign of Tsar Nicholas II. He thought that in romanticising the past he could bolster the legitimacy of the monarchy and solidify its future. A number of works were published to commemorate the anniversary but this is perhaps the most luxurious, especially in the deluxe binding with silver and enamel coat of arms on the upper cover. This example is in exceptionally fresh condition. First edition, folio (36 x 27 cm); 21 full page colour plates with tissue guards, further black and white illustrations and illustrations in the text, text with decorative border, a.e.g.; contemporary deluxe navy leather binding, doublures with white silk moiré guards and gilt dentelles, silver onlay with enamel decoration to upper left corner of the Romanov coat of arms, title in gilt to centre of upper cover, a fine example.
