Rare. The princesses were Varvara Orbebiani and Anna Chavchavadzey and their families and followers. Members of the Georgian royal family, they had occupied distinguished positions at the Russian court as ladies of honour to the Empress. They were released after payment of a large ransom and the return of the legendary warrior Shamil's son who many years previously had been given up to the Russians as a hostage. First English edition, 8vo, xv, 344 pp., engraved portrait (lightly spotted, tiny water stain to lower blank outer margin), plan of seraglio and folding map, contemporary dark blue polished half calf gilt extra, tan morocco label, marbled edges, a fine copy.
