A New Royal and Universal Dictionary of Arts and Sciences: or, Complete System of Human Knowledge. First edition of Cooke's encyclopaedia, a vast and extensively illustrated compendium of articles on the arts and sciences by a variety of writers. The work was the principal rival to the Encyclopaedia Britannica of 1771. It was issued in parts to subscribers and then in book form; there are variant title pages dated from 1769 to 1772.
