variant binding This rare first edition was based on the second German edition (1888). This copy has been bound in the "experimental" pink cloth used by the Baedeker company during 1889. It was not successful and the company soon reverted to the usual red cloth. These examples are rare. Endpapers dated "January 1889". First edition. cxvi, 374pp, a panorama of Athens, 6 maps, 14 plans including folding map in rear pocket, (map a little frayed at and repaired with tape on verso), inner hinges cracked; publisher's variant pink cloth binding, gilt lettered, slightly marked and dirty; a good copy.
