Tosa Washi

£750 · Offered by Maggs Bros Ltd

An in-depth look at paper-making in Tosa (Kochi prefecture, on the Shikoku Island), with essays and captions in English and Japanese. Tosa washi paper has a long history dating back over 1000 years. Indeed, surviving documents from the Heian period note that special paper from Tosa was used to wrap gifts among the aristocracy. During the Edo period, the daimyo from the Tosa region would gift local paper to the Tokugawa shogunate on their visits to the capital for the sankin-kotai (‘alternate attendance’). Paper-making continues in the region today and the present book is a beautifully produced sample book of the Tosa papers.
