£4,500 · Offered by Shapero Rare Books
Scarce. Alexandre de Rhodes (1591-1660), 'the father of the romanization of Vietnamese' (Lust), wrote several books relating to his own experiences in the East. The most important of these is the present book, first published in 1653. Rhodes sheds a strong light on the important outposts of Eastern trade, on the Dutch and English in Java, on the overland route from Surat to Rome, and on the temporal conditions prevailing in the kingdoms of Indochina. 4to, [8], 342 pp., title page with engraved vignette, contemporary calf, unlettered, wear to joints but sound, scuffs to upper cover, a very good copy. Lach III, 408; Cordier (Indosinica), 2417; Cordier (Sinica), 2081; Cf. Lust 228 229; DBS, VI, 1720.
