Peaches, from Space Fruits: Still Lifes

£30,000 · Offered by Shapero Rare Books

Based on a photograph by Ronnie Cutrone—one of Andy Warhol's assistants—Peaches fuses traditional subject matter with Warhol's signature pop art sensibility. Part of Warhol's Space Fruit series that is renowned for its fluorescent and vibrant colours, the silkscreen is an example of Warhol's late-70s focus on traditional still life. The series reimagines six types of fruit through the lens of commercial advertising, amplifying their forms with exaggerated, artificial hues. In this work, the titular peaches are framed by bold and colourful shadows that appear almost as objects in themselves. Placed against a vibrant yellow background, the abstracted fruit floats ethereally; at once graphic and atmospheric. Screenprint in colours, 1979, on Lennox Museum board, signed and numbered 67th from the edition of 150, printed by Rupert Jasen Smith and Joe Grippi, New York, published by Grippi/Zivian, Inc., New York, 76.2 x 101.6 cm.
