A noted linguist and scholar Rich first devoted himself to study of the Middle East during his time as assistant to the British consul-general in Alexandria. A posting in Baghdad followed and it was during this time that he undertook his explorations of Babylon. An undertaking that led to his 1839 publication Narrative of a Journey to the Site of Babylon in 1811 . In 1820, after spending some time in Europe, Rich began an extensive tour of Kurdistan. His in depth geographical and topographical investigations culminated in Narrative of a Residence in Koordistan
