FIELD, Eugene.
£650 · Offered by Peter Harrington · No longer available
The Writings in Prose and Verse. First edition of the complete works, smartly bound for Charles E. Lauriat Company. Field (1850 - 1895) was best known for his children's poetry and his satirical essays that appeared in a number of US newspapers. The author was a lifelong bibliophile with a special interest in fine bindings, so it seems appropriate to see his works bound for Charles E. Lauriat, who specialized in exporting books from London and Paris for the North American market. The seventh volume reproduces Love Affairs of a Bibliophile. In the introduction, Field's sister quotes from his poem "The Bibliomaniac's Bride", "Oh, I should bind this priceless prize / In bindings full and fine / And keep her where no human eyes / Should see her charms, but mine!"This set is complete as issued; two additional volumes were issued in 1900.
