Scarce. We have been unable to trace another copy. Stone presents here a digest of current thinking on the Law of War for his charges in the Egyptian Army. He self-confessedly draws heavily on Lieber’s Instructions for the Government of the Armies of the United States in the Field , but also the works of Halleck, Wheaton and Bluntschli, particularly in those parts relating to the rights of neutrals. Stone “… fought in the American-Mexican War of 1846-7 and on the Federal side in the American Civil War in which he was engaged 1861-4, rising to Brigadier-General… between 1870 and 1883 he served in the Egyptian Army with the rank of fariq as Chief of the General Staff.” [Hill Biographical Dictionary of the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan. ] During this period he was not only responsible for putting the EA on a “professional” footing, but also for an extensive programme of surveying and mapping of the Khedive’s territories.
