PROFECTUS 1956 [cover title]. Yearbook commemorating the graduation year for the Harlem Hospital School of Nursing's Class of 1956. The cover title reads "PROFECTUS," but the first page of text seems to suggest another title reading, "Reflections on the Waters of Time," noting the publication is "Presented by the Class of 1956 Harlem Hospital School of Nursing New York City, New York." The annual is profusely illustrated with photographs and photo-collages of the nurses-in-training, including separate group shots of classes, instructors, yearbook editors, the advisory board, and more. The main section of individual senior class photographs begins with pictures of the class officers, followed by an alphabetical section of the graduates. There are also sections typical of yearbooks, such as remembrances, senior prom photos, advice from graduating seniors to the more junior classes, and more. Most of the last fifteen pages are devoted to a well-wishing section from friends and local advertisements, providing information on businesses for the area around Harlem Hospital during this time. A wonderful memento of the medical education of African-American women in Harlem during the opening years of the Civil Rights struggle.
