Turkestan. Avtolitografii.
£1,200 · Offered by Shapero Rare Books
A fresh example of Kuznetsov's first series of drawings of Turkestan, accompanied by his affectionate essay about the region. Originally a member of the Mir Isskustva group and associated with the Symbolists, Kuznetsov (1878-1968) did not come into his own as an artist until he travelled to Central Asia before the outbreak of WWI. He believed that the landscapes and daily life which he witnessed in the region's ancient cities gave him a whole new artistic approach. This series of illustrations had been lost in his portfolio for years, he found them and decided to publish the work in 1923. First edition; 8vo (23 x 17 cm); illustrated with 14 autolithographs; original printed wrappers, spine glued, minor staining to wrappers but otherwise a very good example.
