The rare issue with 12 original mounted photographs in place of lithographs, noticed by Navari in her catalogue of Henry Blackmer’s collection.Newton was appointed as vice-consul at Mitylene in 1852 and later acting consul at Rhodes. Following his excavations at Kalymnos (1854-55) he supervised the British government’s expeditions to Asia Minor which saw the excavation of one of the seven wonders of the world: the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus. Newton later went on to become Keeper of Greek and Roman Antiquities at the British Museum. Blackmer, 1193.
