I’m selling this hardcover copy of A Dollar the Hard Way: Growing Up in Tough Times in the Ozark Foothills by Kestner Wallace, published by Womble Mountain Press in 2005. This is a first edition copy in dust jacket, signed and inscribed by the author on the title page to Angela, thanking her for illustrating the book. This is a regional memoir / story collection centered on growing up during hard times in the Ozark foothills, with strong Great Depression, rural Americana, family memory, local history, and Saline County Illinois interest. The contents include short pieces such as “Country Boy,” “A Taste of New Molasses,” “Rabbit Soup and Salvation,” “The Making of a Teacher,” “Water High, Cotton Sack Dry,” and other stories rooted in rural life and memory. The book is in solid used condition. The dust jacket has handling wear, edge wear, corner wear, and some rubbing from shelf storage. The hardcover binding is intact, and the interior pages are clean. The signed inscription is the standout feature here, especially because it is addressed to Angela for her work illustrating the book.
