Negotiated in 1842 by Daniel Webster, U.S. Secretary of State and Alexander Baring, first Baron Ashburton, this treaty between the United States and Great Britain established the present day boundary between Maine and New Brunswick. In addition, it granted the U.S. navigation rights on the St. John River, provided for extradition in non political criminal cases, and established a joint naval system for suppressing the slave trade off the coast of Africa.
