BOWEN, Elizabeth.
Inquire · Offered by Peter Harrington
To the North. First edition of the author's fourth novel. This was her first work published with Victor Gollancz, who courted Bowen for his own lists as she was "a prestige point - she was now a prestige commodity" (Glendinng, p. 98). Published nine years into Bowen's comfortable but unconsummated marriage with Alan Cameron, the novel centres on two women, their relationships with each other and with the men they hope to wed. Reviewing her work in The Sketch, the novelist L. P. Hartley wrote: "I was going to say I was among the first to discover its merits, but they were so obvious that one might as well claim the honour of discovering Big Ben".
