Largely reflecting on autobiographical themes, the novel depicts the life of an ordinary soldier in the First World War, covering the battles of Marne, the Somme and Champagne 1917-18. The sequel, After War, helped build Renn's reputation as the most important German communist writer of the inter-war period.
