The Library of A. Chester Beatty,
£2,950 · Offered by Shapero Rare Books
A finely illustrated publication detailing the collection of Indian miniatures of Alfred Beatty (1875-1968), a copper mining tycoon who built up one of the world's greatest collections of western and oriental manuscripts and miniatures. The cataloguing of Beatty's collection of Indian miniatures was originally undertaken by Thomas W. Arnold. Upon his death in June 1930 the project was delayed, until J. V. S. Wilkinson resumed the process including new additions to the collection. The manuscripts and miniatures detailed represent some of the finest products of the Mughal court painters from the sixteenth century onwards, alongside some of the work of artists from the provinces of the Mughal Empire. First edition, first impression; 3 volumes, large folio; 19 plates in colour and 84 in monochrome; original light green cloth, spines lettered in gilt, top edges trimmed, others uncut, spine ends a little bumped, covers a little rubbed. A very good set.
