The Marrying of Ann Leete; The Voysey Inheritance; Waste. A complete set of these limited editions, all lettered "A" of 50 copies printed on handmade paper and bound in half vellum. These plays include The Voysey Inheritance, "a virtuoso display of stagecraft: the writer-director showing that he could handle 12 speaking characters on stage at one time, the actor that he could deal with the most ambitious and unexpected modulations of thought and feeling" (ODNB).Granville-Barker (1877-1946), a collaborator of Bernard Shaw, "can be thought of as the real founder of the National Theatre, and as a writer who, unlike all his contemporaries, learned from Chekhov rather than Ibsen and rivalled both of them. He was also the first modern British director who invariably used all his gifts selflessly in the service of the dramatist to express the full potential of a play" (ODNB).This set is from the theatre collection of Clive Hirschhorn (b. 1940), who spent decades as the Sunday Express's film and theatre critic and whose various histories of Hollywood include The Warner Bros. Story (1978) and The Hollywood Musical (1981). His ownership inscription is pencilled on the front pastedowns, dated 2006.
