Celebration. First edition, inscribed by both authors, the half-title verso reading "For Clive Hirschhorn, Willis Hall", and the title page reading "Keith Waterhouse for Clive Hirschhorn". Hirschhorn (b. 1940) was the long-term film and theatre critic for the Sunday Express. His various histories of Hollywood include The Warner Bros. Story (1978) and The Hollywood Musical (1981). The play premiered in Nottingham Playhouse in 1960, before debuting in London at the Duchess Theatre the following year. Waterhouse and Hall were prolific playwrights and screenwriters who co-wrote several works. Having both originated from the north of England, where this play is set, Waterhouse and Hall were lifelong friends. Hall, in particular, drew on his own working class background as inspiration for his writing.Hischhorn's ownership inscription is on the front pastedown in blue ink, dated 1961.
