First edition
This is an authentic 1940 First American Edition of the beloved holiday classic Babar and Father Christmas, written and illustrated by Jean de Brunhoff. Published by Random House, Inc., New York, this large-format hardcover features the iconic translation by Merle Haas and the beautiful, full-page color lithography that made the Babar series a cornerstone of 20th-century children's literature. Condition Details: • Cover/Spine: The book is in "Acceptable" to "Fair" vintage condition. The yellow cloth spine is heavily frayed and worn, with significant exposure of the underlying binding. The pictorial boards show heavy edge wear, rubbing, and some corner bumping. • Interior: The pages exhibit natural age-toning and some minor finger-soiling from decades of use. There are a few small tears on the edges of the early pages (including the title page), but the vibrant color illustrations remain largely clean and bright. • Endpapers: Features the classic red-and-white elephant patterned endpapers, though there is visible wear and a slight separation at the internal hinges. • Copyright: Explicitly states "Copyright, 1940, by Random House, Inc." with no subsequent printings listed, identifying it as the first US edition.
