CALVERT, James. Surface at the Pole. The extraordinary Voyages of the USS Skate. New York: McGraw-Hill. [1960]. 8vo. Original boards, illustrated wrappers (price-clipped, map endpapers); pp. [iii]-viii, 2], 220, illustrated after photographs on leaves of plates and half-title; light surface wear to wrapper, otherwise very good. First edition, sixth printing, presentation copy inscribed and signed by the author on half-title. Calvert was the commander of the first submarine to surface through the ice when it reached the North Pole on March 17, 1959. A rather risky manoeuvre, as the crew and technicians were not absolutely sure whether the vessel could withstand the impact. SKU: 2125074
