Inscribed by the author to Sir James Ritchie on the title-page. “Gaffer” Scott was the Duke of Monmouth, natural son of Charles II. Monmouth landed in the West Country in 1685 and claimed the crown, but was defeated at the Battle of Sedgemoor, and executed. This book is concerned with the Rye House Plot:“The account of the happenings on 11th June at Lyme-Regis which follows is, for the most part, from Robert’s record of Dassell’s narrative {in his “Life of the Duke of Monmouth”}, Wade’s “Confession,” and Locke’s “The Western Rebellion.”
