A Face in the Crowd. A Play for the Screen. First edition, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For Clive Hirschhorn, who seems to have a lock on Schulbergiana. Best wishes, Budd Schulberg. 12/13/91". Hirschhorn (b. 1940) was the long-term film and theatre critic for the Sunday Express. His various histories of Hollywood include The Warner Bros. Story (1978) and The Hollywood Musical (1981). Schulberg and Elia Kazan formed a successful author-director partnership, their first collaboration On The Waterfront (1954) winning them several Oscars. Subsequently, they decided to work on a new film, one that was their own, adapted from Shulberg's short story "Your Arkansas Traveler".Hirschhorn's ownership inscription is on the front pastedown in blue ink, dated 1959.
