Sweet Charity. First edition, first printing, inscribed by the playwright on the half-title, "To Clive Hirschhorn, from Neil Simon", and again on the title page, "To Clive, Neil Simon". Simon's musical was first performed 29 January 1966 at the Palace Theatre, New York. Hirschhorn, reviewed the 1967 West End production of Sweet Charity favourably, crowning it a "king-sized smash".Hirschhorn (b. 1940) was the Sunday Express's film and theatre critic for several decades and had a significant theatre collection; his ownership inscription is on the front pastedown, dated 1989. His histories of Hollywood include The Warner Bros. Story (1978) and The Hollywood Musical (1981).
