South Pacific. First edition, first printing, second state, of this musical inspired by the novel Tales of the South Pacific (1947) by James A. Michener. The Broadway premier took place at the Majestic Theatre on 7 April 1949. Loosely inserted is a flyer for the West End production at the Theatre Royal (c. 1951-1953). The second state does not mention Joshua Logan and Williamson Music Company on the copyright page.This copy is from the theatre collection of Clive Hirschhorn (b. 1940), who spent decades as the Sunday Express film and theatre critic and whose various histories of Hollywood include The Warner Bros. Story (1978) and The Hollywood Musical (1981). Hirschhorn's ownership inscription is pencilled on the front pastedown, dated 1985.
