Desire Under the Elms. First separate edition of O'Neill's realist play inspired by Euripides' Hippolytus and Jean Racine's Phèdre. The play premiered in November 1924 at the Greenwich Village Theater, New York. It later moved to Broadway and developed into the 1958 film of the same title and starring Sophia Loren.It was first published in The Complete Works of Eugene O'Neill in December 1924.This copy belonged to Clive Hirschhorn (b. 1940), who was the film and theatre critic for the Sunday Express. His ownership inscription is pencilled on the front pastedown, dated 1986.
