Bie starts by enumerating the paradoxa of the Opera as an art form, and how it became the pinnacle of classical art. The book is lavishly illustrated with many b/w illustrations, as well as HAND COLORED plates of figurines and portraits of famous 19th century productions. This 1919 revised edition also includes Bie's personal references about Enrico Caruso, and how he studied with Emmy Destinn for the Berlin premiere of Madame Butterfly, describing the subtlety and richness of Destinn's impersonation. Due to pressure by the Kaiser, the premiere was given to the pushy American Soprano Geraldine Farrar, who - in Bie's opinion - ruined the character of Cio Cio San. Oscar Bier (1864-1938) came from Breslau and studied philosophy, music and art history. From 1895 to 1922 he directed the cultural magazine "Neue Rundschau", which still exists today, and from 1921 he was a professor at the Musikhochschule in Berlin.
