Hyacinth Halvey. First separate British edition, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To A. R. Robinson, from A Gregory, Coole, Sept 20 1929".This was the fifth play Gregory wrote, a "masterpiece of abbreviated complexity" (Stevenson, p. 213). It was first performed at the Abbey Theatre Company, Dublin, on 19 February 1906, alongside two works by W. B. Yeats. The play was first published in the US in 1906 in a limited run of 30 copies by John Quinn, a major patron of the Celtic Revival. In 1909, the trade edition was published in Dublin as part of the anthology Seven Short Plays.Although unmarked as such, this copy is from the theatre collection of Clive Hirschhorn (b. 1940), who spent decades as the Sunday Express film and theatre critic and whose various histories of Hollywood include The Warner Bros. Story (1978) and The Hollywood Musical (1981).
