Inherit the Wind. First edition, first printing, inscribed by Lawrence on the front free endpaper, "For Clive - with deep admiration and affection, always, Jeremy. Jerome Lawrence". Clive Hirschhorn is the long-term film and theatre critic for the Sunday Express and author of various histories of Hollywood. His ownership inscription is pencilled on the front pastedown, dated 1985.The McCarthyist-era play dramatizes the Scopes "Monkey" Trial of 1925, which saw a teacher in Tennessee accused of violating laws against the teaching of human evolution to students. The Broadway premier took place at the National Theatre on 21 April 1955. It was firstly adapted for film in 1960, and most recently in 1999.
