The Adventures of King Pausole. First Tice edition, extra-illustrated deluxe issue, inscribed on the limitation page in pink ink, "Presentation. Clara Tice". The printed limitation notes that 930 of 990 copies were for sale. Clara Tice (1883-1973), a notorious New York bohemian artist dubbed the 'queen of Greenwich Village', was "a kind of Dada 'it' girl. With her short skirts and bob, she was a fashion pioneer. And when a show of her drawings of nudes was shut down by the city vice squad, her career was made" (Cotter). "Her paintings relied upon a palette of pastel and bright colours applied in thin layers. [Her] drawings constitute the bulk of her work - bold and confident strokes brushed onto the page using a staccato technique, telegraphing maximum information with a minimum of line... Tice's etchings resembled in style her drawings; often hand-coloured, they were made for bookplates, greeting cards, and invitations" (Keller, p. 423). They were also made for book and magazine illustrations, including for Vanity Fair. This edition of Louÿs's erotic novel of 1901 was privately printed in English translation for the Pierre Louÿs Society, which disseminated French literary erotica to a New York audience.
