Franklyn served as a Surgeon with the Royal Horse Artillery in the Indian Mutiny, seeing action at Secundra, the capture of Lucknow and elsewhere. He was mentioned in despatches several times “twice for gallantry and once for general ability and zeal”. Subsequently he trained with the Italian Army of the South (Artillery Division) and was a pupil of Sir Edward Creasy, whose “method of description and of weighing evidence” he claims close acquaintance with.
