The route of the canal from Richmond to the Kanawha River in what is now West Virginia, was first proposed by George Washington early in his career as a surveyor. Actual construction began in 1785 with Washington as honorary president of the James River Company, and continued on and off again under the auspices of several authorities until the James River and Kanawha Company took up responsibility in 1835, but never completed the route as a canal. After the Civil War, the partially constructed canal route was turned into a railroad line. Present here are the annual reports of the canal company for 1838, 1839, and 1840.
