RUGBY TENNESSEE BEING SOME ACCOUNT OF THE SETTLEMENT FOUNDED ON THE CUMBERLAND PLATEAU...WITH A REPORT ON THE SOILS OF THE PLATEAU.... An atypical work by the author of TOM BROWN'S SCHOOL DAYS, based on his association with an attempt to found a model community in Rugby beginning in 1879. Thomas purchased the land with some friends, and participated in the growth of the colony which became the largest town on that part of the Cumberland Plateau during the 1880s and 1890s. His mother and younger brother joined him as residents of the community. The soil report was compiled by F.W. Killebrew, the Tennessee Agricultural Commissioner.
