October. A privately printed pamphlet for presentation only, signed by the author on the front wrapper. This poem by the 20-year-old Bradbury is adapted from an audio recording by Walt Daugherty and was intended for circulation among science fiction clubs.Bradbury describes October as "the evidence of a young man going crazy with words, evocations, great shouts and cries about Life and its Meaning... I would not ordinarily allow the publication of an early work like this, for obvious reasons. But Walt Daugherty has promised me this edition would be small and special, and given out only to understanding souls" (preface).Daugherty (1916-2007) was an active member of the early science fiction community. His recording of the 1941 World Science Fiction Convention was the first recording of a convention of its type. He also co-founded the National Fantasy Fan Federation, which claims to be the oldest extant international science fiction organization in the world.
