The History. First Nonesuch Press edition, number 462 of 675 copies, in particularly nice condition with the spine retaining its blue colouring. The Nonesuch Herodotus is a superb example of book design and presswork. At the time of publication, Herodotus had "involved a greater amount of time and ingenuity than any other Nonesuch book" (Dreyfus, p. 73), owing both to the press's financial difficulties and the complex annotation of the text. It received widespread praise upon publication. The Times Literary Supplement noted, on 14 December 1935, that "the Nonesuch Herodotus is true to its name. Herodotus has never been put into better English, never been better annotated, never been printed more magnificently". The exacting master printer of R. & R. Clark, Dr William Maxwell, wrote to Nonesuch saying "The more I look at the work the more my admiration increases for the way in which you have overcome all the difficulties of composition... It is really a beautiful book, a triumph of printing craft" (Dreyfus, p. 74).
