[PENCIL SKETCH OF MUNSON'S HILL, DRAWN IN 1861 FOR Harper's Weekly]. A pencil sketch of Munson's Hill in Northern Virginia, drawn for Harper's Weekly in 1861, when the area close to Washington was famously held by Confederate troops after the First Battle of Bull Run. Munson's Hill was visible from Washington, D.C., and the Confederate flag that was flown atop the hill was discernable from the capital. The verso is captioned, "Rebel fortifications on Munson's Hill." The sketch was perhaps drawn by a member of Winfield Scott's staff, as the annotation goes on to list some of their number.
