REPORT OF THE COMMISSIONERS APPOINTED TO VIEW CERTAIN RIVERS WITHIN THE COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA...AND ACCOMPANIED BY A MAP. A rare report on measures to be taken to improve inland navigation in Virginia, in hopes of improving the state's commerce by connecting it to western and eastern waters. This is a detailed report on the James and Kanhawa rivers, their courses, navigability, and portages. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall was one of the commissioners. Though an accompanying map is mentioned in the title, it seems likely that the map in question was not yet issued, but was the one authorized by the legislature in 1816. In the end this map was not published until 1827. Seventeen copies listed on OCLC, but not in Howes or Sabin, nor in the catalogue of Virginiana in the Virginia State Library. An interesting report on inland transportation.
