Rare first edition. "Principally derived from the works entitled la Descrizione di Napoli by Galanti and the Guida di Sicilia by Giovanna Power" (preface). The publisher dedicated this detailed historical guide to William Ward, 11th Baron Ward, future Earl of Dudley (from 1860). Maps include Syracuse, Sicily and Naples. There was a second edition published in 1847 and a later edition in 1853. The first edition is rare. First edition, 2 vols in 1; 8vo (19.3 x 13 cm); 145pp., 5 maps including large folding map at rear pocket, very fresh internally; contemporary textured brown cloth, faded, flat spine with gilt title and and detail, short splits to head of spine, pocket at rear split along edges; otherwise a good copy.
