The Collected Edition; [together with] -- Collected Essays. First collected edition, Brighton Rock inscribed by the author to "Doctor A. D. Thomson, from Graham Greene". Each volume contains a new introduction by Greene. "In the period between the great depression and the beginning of the cold war the three indispensable novelists are Greene, George Orwell, and Evelyn Waugh... Greene had a rare ability to capture the confusion and terror of the twentieth century" (ODNB). This "indispensable" quality is supported by the fact that Greene was still publishing new material whilst the collected edition was being released, with The Honorary Consul (1973) and The Human Factor (1978) appearing as volumes 21 and 22 respectively.Greene's Collected Essays appeared in 1969, published as a separate volume to the collected edition.
