Falling Angel. First edition, first printing, inscribed by the author on the half-title, "For Joe Collins, With my very best wishes - William Hjortsberg". Hjortsberg's (1941-2017) fusion of the hard-boiled detective and supernatural horror genres was adapted into the 1987 film Angel Heart, starring Robert de Niro. Parts of the novel were first published in Playboy in 1978.Between 1973 and 1983, Harcourt Brace Jovanovich dropped the letter "A" from first-edition letter lines. Falling Angel correspondingly has the line "BCDE" on the copyright page.
