Kawaguchi Ekai was a Japanese Buddhist monk and the first recorded Japanese citizen to travel in Nepal and Tibet. He gives a detailed account of Russian activity in Tibet during this period, 1900-1902, along wih a year's residence in Lhasa. A translation of papers originally published in Japanese newspapers. First edition, 8vo (24 x 15 cm), with 63 text illustrations, 11 photogravures and one folding map, stamp to inner rear inner cover, slight browning and minor spotting, map with some small splits; publisher's original paper wrappers, spine ends very slightly chipped, piece cut from front free endpaper; all housed in modern black slipcase.
