The Works. A tastefully bound set of the Nichols edition. The editor and publisher, John Nichols (1745-1826), spent a lifetime meticulously adding new material to Swift's collected works. It remains "indispensable" to scholars (Maner, p. 495).Nichols's edition of the Works was issued as 19 octavo volumes in 1801. He revised it once more in 1808, but in 1814 Sir Walter Scott "eclipsed" Nichols with his "plagiarized version", which soon became the standard edition for the rest of the century (Maner, p. 481).
