The Exterminator. First edition, first printing, signed by Burroughs on the title page. This is one of only 1,000 copies of Burroughs's attempt to "rub out the word"; signed copies are uncommon. The Exterminator comprises pieces of Burroughs's earlier writing scrambled and "thrown at the reader, or rather, sprayed at him in the same way a machinegun [sic] sprays its target" (rear cover). It is distinct from the short story Exterminator! (1973), which represents "Burroughs' induction into the mainstream and corporate publishing" (Birmingham). In contrast, The Exterminator was published by the printer-poet Dave Haselwood's Auerhahn Press, a small press responsible for publishing many of the key poets of the San Francisco Renaissance in the 1960s.
