The author was surgeon and geologist to the British military expedition which surveyed the valleys of the Tigris-Euphrates in Mesopotamia in 1835-37. Also an amateur archaeologist, Ainsworth was attached to the Euphrates River section of the expedition and augmented his official work with private excursions of his own. An excellent supplement to Chesney's account of the same expedition.
