Hyaku bijin shashincho - The Century Album Beau[t]y Woman.

£750 · Offered by Maggs Bros Ltd

A curious collection of portraits of Japanese women. In this this case the term ‘hyaku’ (meaning: 100) may simply stand for ‘a large number’ of beautiful women. The publisher Ohashido was owned by Hibino Totaro (dates unknown). They were based in Asakusa and published a range of photographically illustrated books, guidebooks (meisho) and illustrated storybooks (tanrokubon), possibly for Japanese tourists. Very rare. No copy in OCLC.
