TREATISE ON TOPOGRAPHICAL DRAWING. Seth Eastman was an accomplished topographical artist and illustrator, known for his illustrations for books by Henry Schoolcraft and by his wife, Mary Eastman, as well as for his maps. The present volume is an elusive book in which the author calls for a uniform system of topography in America. He describes the topographical delineation of hills and rocks, discusses the representation of light, methods of sketching and drawing, perspective, the problems inherent in reduction and enlargement, and more. Many of the principles and methods are illustrated in the plates, four of which are facsimiles of Eastman's own rough sketches. This work was used by West Point Military Academy for a number of years to educate officers in topographical drawing.
