[SKETCHBOOK OF JOURNALIST ALBERT SHAW FROM 1877, DURING HIS TIME AT IOWA COLLEGE]. A sketchbook that belonged to noted journalist Albert Shaw as a young man at Iowa College (now Grinnell College) in 1877. Shaw held a number of positions throughout his long career, but is best known for his editorship of the Review of Reviews, a monthly digest of scholarly articles and periodicals that was published for over forty-five years, from 1891 to 1937. "As editor and publisher of the Review of Reviews, Albert Shaw was a major figure in American periodical journalism for nearly half a century" - ANB.This volume contains almost twenty of Shaw's sketches from the summer of 1877. They consist predominately of nature scenes, still lifes, and architectural drawings made in the vicinity of Spirit Lake in northern Iowa. There are also several scenes of camping and fishing. An interesting souvenir of Shaw's college life, before he went on to be an important figure in turn-of-the-century publishing.
